Hello world.Today I searched a really cool question: Why/How do people hiccup? Don't you think its interesting, because whenever you hiccup, you don't really know what made you go "heka!... heka!.... heka!.." because it happens at weird situations, and is unpredictive. Now let me teach you a little. Some people say that when you hiccup, your heartbeat actually stops beating for that moment, well, that is what some people say. Neuroaccoustic disfragmacontractions, commonly known as hiccups or hiccoughs occur when the diaphragm spasm and contracts, which causes the person to breathe in suddenly. However, the inhalation of air is stopped as the gap between the vocal cords, or, glottis is reduced as the diaphragm contracts, which causes a characteristic hiccup sound. This process is repeated by spasms for several minutes. As what articles from BBA say, people hiccup because they are triggered by gastric illiness and several other causes, due to the over-expansion or over-distension of the stomach, usually. It can be caused by drinking too much alcohol, excitement, anxiety, stress, eating hastily, laughing or coughing -> gas problem in stomach. You can cure a hiccup by: Holding your breathe, Breathing deeply and slowly, Receiving a sudden shock, Drinking a glass of water backwards, drinking through a straw with your fingers in your ears, drinking water while breathing, yeah yeah. But ways to cure a hiccup varies with each individual, and for me, I cure my hiccup by telling people "I'm hiccupping." I can't believe that people might opt for surgical methods to 'cure' their hiccup. (I think having hiccups is fun once in a while!) As the society modernizes, it is possible to cure severe cases of hiccups by crushing the phrenic nerve, which allows the diaphragm to remain relaxed. Oh, and the other time, I learnt a bit about how to manage an asthma attack (for a friend). It is always good for the individual to learn about his/her triggers and then know how to prevent her asthma attack from happening. Asthma is the disease affecting the breathing passages of the lungs (bronchioles), caused by long-term(or chronic) inflammation of these air passages. The air sacs would be filled with mucus and swells and air passages narrows/tightens(bronchospasm), making the victim difficult to breathe from the lungs. These are triggered by internal or external factors. Asthma is a disease which cannot be cured, but can be controlled. From what a friend told me, asthma can be controlled best when treatment is given to one at a young age. And learning how to breathe (breathing exercises), by taking a deep breathe through the nose, and exhaling the breath slowly as you keep your lips pursed. First thing one can do is to keep the victim calm and as comfortable as possible -let them lean i to you- and try to remain as calm as possible, because the victim is probably upset of the breathing difficulty and you don't want the surroundings to affect the asthma victim to just make the situation worse. The next best thing is probably to help the asthma victim breathe easier, in my opinion to keep the victim as relaxed as possible, and take breaths through the nose and out from the mouth. Cup both hands at the front and back of the chest, and make the victim breathe. Would appreciate if u have other practical ideas to discuss. :) back to the top? |
