Hello!Today was a fine day :) I attended the 2nd Assembly for Youth's Environment Conference thing earlier today. My first visit to Singapore Poly too! Haha, we gathered at the atrium and sat in the MERCEDES-BENZ van that fetched us to SP. On our way, we suddenly felt so important knowing that we are sitting in a MB van. Then, a sudden realisation struck us that.. actually SBS and public buses are Mercedes-Benz too. Haha! The van ride reminded Debra (dino) and I of the very 'Australian' feeling. Yeah, I still recall the time we travelled goldcoast and brisbane in the bus that has similar windows and spacious seats. =) Mr Yong was really entertaining in the bus, his talking made the journey shorter by a huge lot! Then the lecture was about the title of this post. The lecture (other than teabreak, hehe!) was the best part of my day I think. ALTHOUGH, many may feel that lectures are usually mind-numbing, banal, draggy.. But I felt that it was the most interesting because there were stuff WORTHY to learn about, really. This meant that our biodiversity talk sucked a bit at delivering the knowledge bit. (www.storyofstuff.com by Annie Leonard) For our biodiversity talk: we quickly found a group of 5 primary school boys to discuss with. Firstly we did: a mindmap on the plants and animals we can find in singapore. The boys were pretty enthusiastic and gave ideas quickly. One boy was funny. Initially I wanted to put 'Mushroom' under plants, he said NO MUST BE 'FUNGI!!!!'. then another was funny too. Me: "Ok, we have toadstool as our mushroom, right?" Him: "HUH, I thought toadstool was TOAD like FROGS (ribbit ribbit), and shys away" Really cute. Then they also showed us slide shows of the plants and animals found in singapore, also with their camouflage.. blah blah. Ok, was nice to look at, but dang, i cannot remember the name. how about the hawk-cuckoo bird? =) Secondly, we did: Angel-and-Devil game. Ok it was dumb to me, seriously =_=! And after the end of the game, the purposed of it was supposedly: Humans are selfish, and we often do not care about the consequences of our actions. For example, we consume too much that we often do not care about the environment and leave it in a DYING state. Moving on, for the game we just had to target 2 ppl, 1 as angel, the other as devil, and your not supposed to tell anyone about your 'targets'. Just make sure that the angel is between u and the devil, in a linear formation. As you know, kids like moving so as our target moves we moves. As everyone as a different target, everybody moves. And it was chaotic. This carried on for 6 minutes. At the end of 6 minutes... Guy: "May I know who lived!!!!!" older kids, * sian look * younger kids * MEMEME * Then he just asked if u are still in the linear formation or not, if you're not you're considered to be dead. If you are, no difference as you are dead because there is not difference. But, the most important thing wasnt recapitulated though. Thats why the game really really felt stupid and lacked purpose. Thirdly, MODIFIED VERSION OF a.e.i.o.u.. Instead of reading aeiou, you count 1 2 3. OK, LAME. Then the point of this game is to teach you to freeze yourself. So, u can carry on the next game. Fourthly, before we played FreezeFrame(game), we had to sit and be dramatic. Think of a problem the earth is facing right now, and use your body to express it. OK I THINK I SUCK AT IT BUT I THOUGHT THAT I HAD A BRILLIANT IDEA. (SADLY IT WASN'T EXPRESSED IN THE RIGHT WAY, again. =_=) seriously, I think wenying needs an expression course! ): So, my idea was that: With more industrialization, commercialization, land space to plant trees are getting more and more scarce. hence, BAD. So (Little Land on Earth) was what i wanted to express. I was in kneeling position and u know like how indians eat their rice, the way they 'group' their fingers together to scoop the rice into the mouth, I raised both hands and put it in that position. OK. the hand position was meant to be LITTLE BIT LITTLE BIT. and the kneeling down was supposed to be MOTHER EARTH. oh god! Suddenly, I realised that I was doing a vulgarity action. like how ppl want to show the middle finger, but has no guts so they show all the fingers? you know right? =_= (I SUCK BIG TIME!) but i thought it was hilarious after I told mr yong serena and dino about it when everything ended. Ok, back to FreezeFrame. I was regrouped into the group with similar minded people with the idea of 'cutting down trees'. so, i thought we had a rather nice freezeframe image. (oh in my opinion, i call it freeze frame because we are in the picture "frame" and we freeze for a moment. Then we would get questions like Who am I, what am I doing here, what can I cause / implicate. Ok, not every group presented. (not fun ): ) Then we discussed what are the possible future projects that w can carry out as an invidividual to play a part to save the environment OK and thats the end of Singapore Biodiversity. its like dotz do you agree? I was imagining like them to teach us about how to reach out to animals, what kind of harm they will cause to us vice versa if we keep reducing their habitat. or also the names of the various species of plants and animals. how to save them, as in REALLY save them. not like proposed solutions like (rooftop gardens... eh?) Oh and we made a pledge to stay green :) Ok, till next time ! Wenying <3 back to the top? |
